back to childhood
Maybe it's the weird times we live in, but lately I often think about the "good old days when I was young". As we all know, it wasn't all good, we also had some serious problems (or at least we thought they were serious) like having a crush on a girl but beeing to shy to tell her and stuff like that.
But I am sure, that most of us have a lot of memories about old video games we played in these times, and when thinking about them, you get nostalgic and have at least a little smile on your face. Speaking of nostaligic, I am sure there are some games that are way better in our remembrance than they are in reality. So the best way is to keep them there. On the other hand there are some old gems that are totally worth playing today (at least because they maybe give you a little time out from everyday life).
Before I got hooked by Dave the Diver I started to play Final Fantasy IX on my Steam Deck. To be honest, I started this game many times before on other consoles but it never got me like on these days back on the first PlayStation. It was my first Final Fantasy Game and I remember that I played the game with cheats (shame on me) and after the final cut scene I was crying like a child (as I was a child, but that's not the point here). It was such a great game for me and I feld so connected to the story, the world, the characters. So yesterday I finished the story of Dave (couldn't recommend this game enough, just play it!) and got back to Final Fantasy IX. With the HD mod on Steam Deck the game looks good. Not fantastic, but it still has it's charme. In my view the best feeling those old games give you is this: On the one hand there are a lot of things that feel familiar, it's like coming home or meet an old friend. On the other there are moments you have forgotten and it's great to experience them again.
The day before yesterday the remake of The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion released and I am sure that this is one of those games that let you feel what I described.
I have another example: The GTA Trilogy. Let's stay positive and not talk about the horrible release.
As I was a child, I didn't have my own PC, but my cousin had. We were/are the same age and kind of best friends. So nearly every weekend I took the bus and went to his home to play video games on his PC. Besides games like the awesome Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004 we played GTA 3 and Vice City. I don't remember the storyline, I'm sure we didn't really played it and just used cheat codes to get the tank an destroyed everything. But it was a great time and everytime I think about it, it makes me smile.
Some years later I had my own PS2 and GTA San Andreas released. HipHop was on its peak, we all wanted to be "Gangsta" (or emo, you do you) and I guess it was the perfect time for this game. After hours of playing this game, you knew all the streets and San Andreas was like a second home town. All the possibilities you had in this game, like getting fat or buffed. The great soundtrack, this game was peak!
Getting back today, the GTA Trilogy is on sale on Steam, next week I have some days off from work and I am really excited to get those nostalgic feelings wether from playing Final Fantasy IX or GTA San Andreas.
I am sure we all need this sometimes. It doesn't count which game (or movie or song) let's you feel this, all that matters is, that it gives you a smile and let you have a good time.
So if there is no indie game right now you wanted to play (yes, I'll say it again, get Dave the Diver!), grab an old game wether its remasterd or not and become this little girl or boy you used to be for a short time again.
